Glossary

 

Adaptation - How an animal has changed to suit its environment

Biodiversity - Range/number of different plants and animals in an area

Climate - Average weather conditions in an area

Conservation - Being careful to avoid damaging the environment

Endangered - An animal at risk of dying out will be called endangered

Extinct - No longer existing – died out

Food chain and web - How food sources (plants and animals) are linked together

Fragile - Delicate, easily harmed

Glacier - Large mass of ice-sometimes moving very slowly down a valley

Global Warming - Temperatures around the world are rising

Greenhouse effect - Heat trapped in the earth's atmosphere due to increased carbon dioxide and methane gases

JPT - Junior Polar Traveller (of course!)

Peninsula - Area of land surrounded on three sides by water

Pollution - Harmful substances in the air

Precipitation - Water falling back to earth as rain, hail, snow, sleet

Raw materials - Natural and man-made materials used to make goods

Remote - Isolated, far away from other places

Sparsely populated - Area where few people live measured per square kilometre)

Sustain - Maintain/protect something

Treaty - Formal agreement between countries

Wilderness - An untouched and uninhabited area (humans do not live there)

World Heritage Site - Unique area worth protecting or saving for the benefit of everyone
