Where am I?
“In whatever direction I turn, I will always be looking north” Answer: South Pole
Who am I?
An adaptation is a way an animal’s body helps it survive, or live, in its environment.
Below are different adaptations that animals have so that they can survive living in the harsh Antarctic conditions. Can you guess which ones belong to which animal?
Hint: Some of these may match up to more than one animal!
Whale, Penguin, Seal, Fish, Albatross, Krill, Penguin
I have webbed feet for powerful swimming
My wings are shaped like flippers to help me swim
My feathers are coated with oil from a gland near my tail to help me stay waterproof
I have stiff tightly-packed feathers that overlap to provide waterproofing
I huddle together with my friends to keep me warm
I have heavy, solid bones which act like a divers weight belt to allow me to stay underwater
Fish
I have anti-freeze in my blood to prevent me from freezing
Albatross
I migrate to a warmer country in winter
I can travel long distances to find food because of my long wing span
I have a large, strong and sharp-edged bill to catch my prey
I have a mechanism at the base of my wing so that I can keep my wings out at an extended position without straining myself. Kind of like a cruise control!
Seal
I have needle-like teeth which are well suited to catching slippery prey
I have slits for nostrils that naturally close underwater
I have large eyes so I can swim and hunt in the dimly-lit depths of the sea
I have a thick ‘no-neck’ physique and a loosely interlocked spine to make me strong and flexible enough to surf the waves and navigate ice and rocky shores
Most mammals have 13 pairs of ribs, but I have two extra pairs so there is more room for my large lungs to help me dive to low depths
Krill
I can lay up to 10,000 eggs at a time to make sure that s
I can survive for up to 200 days without food – I can shrink in length as they starve
I hang out with my thousands of friends in a swarm. Swarming is a defensive mechanism, confusing smaller predators that would like to pick out single individuals
Whales
I migrate to warmer seas in winter
I either have a mouth that has a huge hairy plate that acts like a sieve and filters krill, plankton and crustaceans out of the sea water OR I have teeth so that I can feed on larger prey
I am very large to prevent other animals from eating me
Because I eat meat I used echolocation to hunt (like bats do). I make a sound and that bounces off objects giving me a mental picture of where my prey is
I can hold my breath for a long time but I have a blow hole to breathe out of when I need to
Seal, Penguin, Whale
My body is streamlined to reduced the drag in the water
I have thick skin and lots of fat underneath the skin to keep me warm
