Antarctic Treaty

After the discovery of Antarctica there were a number of expeditions to the continent. Many of these were sponsored by different governments in the hope that they would find some valuable resources like oil or coal.

By 1950 seven countries had laid claim to different parts of Antarctica. Tension mounted when the USA and Russia both threatened to take over the continent.

Fortunately by 1957 an agreement was reached between twelve countries to work together for a year on science projects. It was such a success that in 1961 they signed the Antarctic Treaty. This set aside all claims to Antarctica in the name of promoting peace and science in this unique environment.
