Antarctica
Go as far south as you can, and you will eventually hit the Antarctic. It’s such a huge piece of land that it is a continent all on its own (all the other continents are made up of more than one country).
The Antarctic is covered with a thick layer of ice all year round. The only creatures and plants that survive there are ones that are brilliantly adapted to living in the freezing cold.
No-one owns the Antarctic, and the only people living there are scientists and researchers from all over the world. Over the last two centuries, hundreds of explorers have taken on the challenge of travelling across this massive icy desert. The latest team to try it is the Regan-Moon crew.
Measuring climate on the Antarctic can tell us a lot about the climate on the whole planet – and can help to forecast the future of global warming.
